Welcome to the world of health and nutrition. Both have played an important role in our lives, even before we were born, although we may not always have been aware of it and it will continue to affect us in major ways, depending on the food we choose.

Every day, several times a day, we make food choices that influence our body’s health for better or worse. Each day’s choices may be beneficial or harmful to our health only a little, but when we make these choices on a regular basis over the years, the rewards or consequences become major; therefore healthier lifestyle today can bring health benefits later. Equally, negligence about food choices from youth on can be a major contributor to many of today’s most common chronic diseases later in life, including heart disease and cancer. Naturally, as we all know some people will become ill or die young no matter what choices they make, and others will live longer despite making poor choices, however, the majority of us ‘are what we eat’.

While most of us understand that our food habits affect our health, we often choose food for other reasons i.e. pleasure, tradition and social interactions.

Boy’s I’m sure you will know what I mean – how many of you finish a game of football late at night and go straight to the Kebab house for a Donner, chips and cheese or a large spicy chicken pizza between your friends?! Why?? Maybe because it’s the only place open at that time of night or maybe even it’s a part of social interactions. Food signifies sociability, meals are social events, and the sharing of food is part of hospitality, social habits almost compel people to accept food or drink offered or shared by a group. Hence, if your mates are out for a bite to eat, how can you possibly refuse to go along?

Girls how many of you have gone to Pizza Hut for lunch with your mates and felt guilty the whole day for eating too much?! Feeling bloated and fat?! Well you will be happy to know it’s not bad for the occasional treat, it’s all about the balance.
