Glasgow Ansar was originally formed in 2001 to provide a sporting platform for the ethnic minority youth from Glasgow’s Southside. However the initial success has been such that the organisation has developed dramatically in an incredibly short period of time. The organisation is no longer restricted to the ethnic minorities, boasting membership from a wide cross-section of the community it serves. Currently membership is in excess of 200 ranging in ages from 8 to 45 and from both sexes. Furthermore it no longer confines its activities to the sports arena. Through strong networking links and collaborative work with local agencies the service provision now encompasses areas as diverse as careers advice, counselling, confidence building and access to both academic and sporting qualifications: to name but a few.
Glasgow Ansar acknowledges the privileged position it is in as a developmental force amongst the youth culture. Therefore at the forefront of our aims is to constantly advise on the benefits of healthy living and recreational activity as an alternative to the evils of drug abuse and petty crime. Supplementing all sporting and recreational activities with a balanced social programme is very important. Weekend breaks and day trips are regular features, providing children with access to such events who would not otherwise be in a position to. The children are informed that these events are not merely arranged for the fun element although this is important. However they are also vital in developing sound social skills for many.
Glasgow Ansar has now become an organisation that stages events throughout the city to help promote tolerance and equality. Other than football tournaments it has in conjunction with Glasgow City Council arranged Easter and Summer holiday programmes for young children using our own staff, having assisted them in achieving their relevant qualifications.
Glasgow Ansar also firmly believes that the parents who entrust their children to our organisation also have a right to demand more. Children are constantly reminded that life is not all fun and games. Through the wide skill base within the organisation older members impress upon the younger membership the importance of achieving and maximising their academic potential. Workshops, training and seminars are arranged, where career prospects are discussed and relevant advice and indeed opportunities are provided. Indeed Glasgow Ansar may well be unique in allowing children as young as 14 to be involved in the organisation’s structure and offering places on its committee to them. Enabling them to not only propose ideas and form the future of the organisation but also learn new skills such as minute taking and chairing.
Glasgow Ansar is not only committed to providing the best possible service at the present time but to enable us to provide an even better service we are constantly monitoring, evaluating and reviewing through structured procedures.
